LandstarOne
Unblocking truck drivers to book new loads: a $28.6 million problem.
The Booking Blocker
Every time a driver completes a delivery, their next paycheck depends on booking a new load. But a persistent, invisible bug was standing in their way: dispatchers routinely forgot to update the system after a shipment was finished, leaving the driver's truck flagged as "still attached" to a completed load.
To the app, the driver looked busy. To the driver, the booking screen was simply locked. There was no fix, no workaround, and no one to call who could solve it fast enough. Across Landstar's 11,000+ independent drivers, this single gap meant $18.6 million lost to BCOs and $10 million lost to Landstar in lost earnings and missed freight.
Listening to the Driver
We went to a trailer pool in Ohio to see how trailers were hooked and unhooked to gain the right user perspective for the design. We also conducted design validation and usability testing in Georgia.
If I'm out of compliance I will have 2–3 trailers on there and I don't have them, and haven't had them for who knows how long. So, this will make it easy.
Back on the Road
Trailer Hook gives drivers a dead-simple way to log their own trailer connection — right from the cab, gloves on, side mirror in view. After hooking a new trailer, the driver opens LandstarOne, types the trailer number (no scanning required), swipes to confirm, and feels a haptic tap the moment the tractor and trailer connect on screen.
The system automatically drops the previous trailer, eliminating a redundant step. Landstar-owned and third-party trailers are identified instantly, with the right legal notice shown automatically. The driver is marked available. The next load is one tap away.
