Overview

Powerful messaging emerges when words and images work together seamlessly. Many designs focus heavily on image selection, giving little thought to typeface or word choice. Stronger work integrates image, typeface, and carefully chosen words from the start, considering audience and meaning. Precision in language and avoiding clichés makes communication stand out. Mastery of language is essential.

Process

It begins with an idea—transforming the scent of coffee grounds into a visual form. I started by jotting down descriptive words inspired by what I smelled and sensed, capturing the essence of the experience. This ethnographic approach helped me pinpoint and convey the specific feeling I aimed to express.

Sketches

This piece visually expresses raw emotion, capturing the feeling I associate with these words in a direct and honest way. Though unrefined, it conveys the essence of the experience with authenticity, inviting viewers to connect with the underlying sentiment through its simplicity and immediacy.

Using the logo provided by the instructor as a foundation, the next objective was to translate the word associations and initial sketches into a compelling advertisement for a perfume company. Below are three distinct iterations I developed, each aiming to effectively promote this fictional brand through varied visual and conceptual approaches.

Revisions

For the final studio, I revisited and refined this piece to enhance its overall unity. I was drawn to the intricate lines, which echo the complexity and evoke the 'smokey' and 'cigar' qualities described. To strengthen the sensory experience, I incorporated photos that matched the atmosphere I wanted to convey, tilting the images to reflect the angular diamond logo and build visual cohesion. I also selected colors that capture the crispness and boldness of the flavors, aiming to create a harmonious composition that embodies the essence of the brand.
